Two new buildings at the Outdoor Ice Oval

Prince George, BC, May 14, 2015  –  Outdoor ice oval volunteers and representatives from the many local companies attended the official donation of two new buildings at the Outdoor ice Oval.  The two new buildings are legacies of the Canada Winter Games and will make skating at the oval more enjoyable for everyone.

The Construction Association Ice Oval Centre was completed with the generous support of the Prince George Construction Association and a long list of its member companies who contributed in every aspect of the project, from removing the berm, to constructing the buildings, to painting the walls.  During the Canada Winter Games, the new building was the centre of activities for the long track speed skating event.  For the future, the primary use of the building is to store the ice maintenance equipment for the oval, including the water truck, two Bobcat machines, and a Zamboni.

“We were delighted to be partners for this project and are proud to have our name associated with this building,” said, Iain Elder of the Construction Association.  “It is a wonderful legacy for Prince George and everyone who skates at the oval.”

The second new building at the oval may be familiar to anyone who visited downtown Prince George during the Winter Games.  The Canfor House was in the heart of the Games Village and is now located permanently at the outdoor oval.

Canfor is thrilled with the outcome.  Luke Drapeau, the General Manager with Canadian Forest Products Ltd. for Operations West, explained, “Canfor was really proud to be part of the Canada Winter Games and is so pleased to have found such a good fit for the Canfor House at the oval.”

Kathy Lewis, President of the Outdoor Ice Oval Society, is thrilled to have these new buildings.  “I can’t wait to see the smiles on the faces of skaters who come out next winter,” said Lewis, explaining that the Canfor House will be used as a skate change area for public skating. “Everything was outdoors before and now parents can tie their children’s skates in a warm building,” said Lewis.

“It’s not just a building,” Lewis added about the Construction Association building.  “It’s a customized building at ice level that meets our specific needs.  For our volunteer maintenance crew, it makes their life so much easier.”

The outdoor ice oval is a 400-metre skating facility made with natural ice.  The oval is maintained by volunteers of the Outdoor Ice Oval Society of Prince George with the support of the City of Prince George.  The outdoor ice oval was the host venue for long track speed skating during the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
